The Supreme Court on Tuesday said it will commence on July 11 the final hearing of appeals filed by Tamil Nadu (TN), Karnataka and Kerala against the 2007 award of the Cauvery Water Dispute Tribunal on sharing of water. The court will continue the hearing for 15 consecutive working days.
A bench headed by Justice Dipak Misra said all interim orders to Karnataka directing the release of 2,000 cusecs of water will continue to be in force.
Appearing for TN, senior advocate Shekhar Naphade alleged that Kerala is drawing excess water to build a check dam across the inter-state Bhavani river, which is a tributary of Cauvery. The allegations were denied by counsel for Kerala who said the height of the dam would not hinder the flow of water.
The bench said the dam project cannot be stalled but the counsel for Kerala may give an undertaking saying the flow of water will not be hindered.
