The CPM-led opposition disrupted proceedings of the Kerala assembly on Monday, demanding a fresh investigation into the alleged role of PJ Kurien, Rajya Sabha deputy chairman, in the Suryanelli sex scandal.

The house witnessed uproarious scenes after speaker G Karthikeyan rejected an adjournment motion following the reply of home minister T Radhakrishnan that the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) government could not demand a re-investigation because the complaint against Kurien was dismissed by the Supreme Court.

Last week the Supreme Court had rejected the Kerala high court's order acquitting 35 accused in the case and directed it to complete the trial in six months.

The 1996 case relates to the abduction of a 16-year-old girl from her house at Suryanelli in Idukki district by a bus conductor on the promise of marrying her.

He then confined her at various places and allowed as many as 42 people to sexually exploit her over 40 days. Following the SC order, the victim had announced her plan to file a review petition against Kurien.

Opposition leader VS Achuthanandan said Left Democratic Front (LDF) legislators would not allow the House to function till the government ordered a fresh probe into the case.

However, the home minister said the LDF was in power when the complaint against Kurien was rejected by the Supreme Court in 2007.

He sought to know why

the then government had not filed a special leave petition and remained silent all these years.
