In a horrific incident of campus violence, three students of an engineering college in Tuticorin district, about 590 km from Chennai, hacked the principal to death on Thursday.
The police said LRD Suresh, the 55-year-old principal of Infant Jesus
College of Engineering at Vallanadu, was attacked with sickles by the three students and died on the way to hospital.
Suresh was on heading to his office on the college campus on Thursday morning when the three students attacked him. Other students and faculty members found the principal in a pool of blood and rushed him to a hospital. He succumbed to his injuries on the way.
The three students have been arrested. The police have identified the trio as 21-year-old P Pichaikannan, an aeronautical engineering student, 22-year-old G Dannis, a B Tech student, and 21-year-old M Prabakaran, a BE Civil engineering student.
According to the police, Pichaikannan was part of a kangaroo court which arbitrated in a quarrel between two other students. When the college authorities came to know about this, they suspended Pichaikannan two days ago. The police believe that Pichaikannan attacked the college principal along with his two friends to avenge his humiliation.
The incident brought back memories of the murder of Professor HS Sabharwal in Uttar Pradesh in August 2006. Head of the political science department of Ujjain’s Madhav College, Sabharwal was attacked by a rampaging mob of ABVP activists. He was beaten to death on the college campus and the scenes of the assault were broadcast live on TV. The accused were later let off by a court for want of evidence.
