A 35-year old man died of swine flu in the first such fatal case at a private hospital in Thiruvananthapuram tonight.

Wilson, who had returned from the Gulf, was hospitalised six days ago and was put on ventilator support a day after he was in hospital. The patient had recently visited Tamil Nadu before returning to Kerala.

Dr Anoop, who treated the patient, told PTI that even at the time of his admission, Wilson was suffering from high fever and his throat swab was sent for examination to the National Institute of Virology in Pune.

He was being treated for swine flu even while awaiting the results of the tests, Anoop said.

Wilson fell victim to the dreaded disease, even as the Kerala government today stepped up vigil and decided to set up testing centres in all the districts in the wake of the threat posed by the spread of H1N1 influenza in the country.

Two persons were quarantined in Kozhikode with suspected flu symptoms today, official sources said.

A total of 55 confirmed swine flu cases have been reported in Kerala so far and test results were awaited in 18 suspected cases, sources said.

State Health Minister P K Sreemathi held a video conferencing with district collectors and medical officers to chalk out preventive measures and ensure proper treatment to the affected.

Seven to 10 screening centres would be set up in each district and a massive awareness campaign would be launched in the state, Sreemathi said.

Meanwhile, a Central team that visited some viral fever-affected areas for the last two days, said there was no need for panic.
