The girl had initially told the police that she was attacked by two men on a bike in Etmadpur town in Agra on Tuesday evening. She claimed they had tried to rape her, but ended up dragging her to the railway line and cut off her hand.

A 16-year-old dalit girl from Agra who alleged that her arm was chopped off during a botched rape attempt may actually have made up the story, the police have said.

The girl had initially told the police that she was attacked by two men on a bike in Etmadpur town in Agra on Tuesday evening. She claimed they had tried to rape her, but ended up dragging her to the railway line and cut off her hand.

However, the family did not lodge a complaint in the matter and the girl was quietly admitted to a private hospital in the area on the same night. However, after word about the ‘rape’ got around, the police began a probe.

As the investigation proceeded, the girl and her mother changed their version and confessed that they had made up the story. “My daughter lost her hand in the accident but we were told that if we portrayed the incident as a crime, we would get monetary help,” the girl’s mother admitted.

The girl said, “I was sitting near the railway line and when the train approached the line, I lost balance and fell on the track. The train cut off my hand.”

The girl and her mother were at the railway lines to attend to nature’s call.

Babita Sahu, SP (rural), who met the family at the hospital said, “The girl and her mother admitted they did not have the money to bear the expenses of treatment and that someone gave them the idea of concocting the attempt to rape story.”

“We are looking for the person who instigated the family into turning the accident into a crime story,” she added.

Agra SSP Preetinder Singh said, “The girl’s father is a labourer with limited means and six children. We have assured the family of medical help.”

No police report had been lodged in the case.
