The woman who has accused Tehelka founder-editor Tarun Tejpal of sexual assault and rape has complained that her email account was ‘duplicated’ to send mails to her boyfriend, the Supreme Court was told Friday.

An FIR was registered on June 25. No one has been named as investigations were on, the Goa government told the court which was hearing Tejpal’s plea for regular bail.

Government counsel additional solicitor general Neeraj Kishan Kaul asked the court not to extend Tejpal’s interim bail that ended Friday. But, the court extended the relief to July 1.

The court had on May 19 given bail to the 51-year-old journalist to perform the final rites of his mother.

Later, the relief was extended to June 27.

The mails purportedly sent from the complainant’s email account, created through a phishing site, asked her boyfriend to send their photographs to a WhatsApp account. The victim, said Kaul, was surprised to learn about the email that she had never sent. WhatsApp is a popular messaging application that allows exchange of text, pictures, video and audio clips.

Tejpal had a history of intimidating investigating officer in the case and a mobile phone was found on him when he was in custody, Kaul told the court.

Tejpal’s counsel senior advocate Salman Khurshid took exception to Goa government’s arguments and said the “so-called FIR” was irrelevant to his client’s bail plea.

The vacation bench headed by Justice Vikramjit Sen, however, refused to go into details and posted the matter for July 1, when the court reconvenes after summer break. He also directed that Tejpal’s bail plea be heard by a regular bench.

Tejpal is being tried for allegedly raping, sexually harassing and outraging the modesty of a junior colleague during a Tehelka event hosted at a Goa hotel in November. Tejpal was arrested on November 30.
