The Ahmedabad serial blasts have, overnight, changed the life of Kenneth Haywood in faraway Navi Mumbai. His Wi-fi connection was used to send an e-mail threat informing about the strike. The general manager of Campbell White Executive Soft Skills Company spoke to Hindustan Times — his first interview — between endless interrogations by the Anti-Terrorism Squad.

Tell us your side of the story.

I learned of the blasts from a phone call from Delhi around 10pm on the 26th from a person who turned out to be your reporter. I was asleep, and really didn't register the situation. A short time later, the ATS (Anti-Terrorism Squad) came and have been in and out for the next three days. They told me from the start I had never been a suspect, and they were very professional throughout.

They found that someone had accessed our wireless router from outside and sent an email related to the blasts. We let the ATS investigate our computers for anything that can lead them to these people.

What has happened over the last few days since the ATS came to your residence?

We just want to see a resolution so our lives can return to normal.

What is the ATS saying now? Have they given you a clean chit? Are they still at your home?

They have left our home. They have told the US Consulate, our company’s attorney and us that we are in the clear. Our passports are in tact, we have freedom to come and go, so we assume they are telling us the truth.

Do you suspect someone? Some internet provider person who may have colluded with the culprits? Did some strangers approach you recently?

As you reported this morning, only the internet provider set up the router, but the police will sort it all out.

Which internet connection do you have at home?

Tata/VSNL Broadband
How do you think the computer may have been hacked?

I'm not an IT professional. I have no idea how all that works.

Americans, barring 9/11, have been insulated from terrorism. Has the reality hit you hard?

Certainly, the world will never really be the same. We can all just hope the culprits who do these things are caught.

How do you see life after this? Is there any fear?

Obviously you would have to be afraid, I am a father with two teenage girls in a foreign land, but criminals are in every nation.

Do you intend to continue to stay on in India?

Yes, terrorists win, if they force you to hide
