Chidambaram shocked over mass killing of CRPF in Dantewada

Home Minister P Chidambaram on Tuesday expressed shock over the killing of Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) soldiers by Maoists in Dantewada district of Chattisgarh and said that something must have gone drastically wrong in Chhattisgarh where a CRPF patrol during Operation Green Hunt came under naxal attack.

The on going 'Operation Green Hunt' launched jointly by the central Indian and Maoists infested state governments to flush out the Maoists witnessed a dramatic twist on Monday. The Maoists in Gaya distributed leaflets appealing Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) to joint their movement against the government by contending it was a crusade in favour of the poor and the needy. The personnel of the security forces also fall in this bracket, the Maoists noted in the leaflet.

Maoists will now be confronted, warns Chidambaram

Strongly condemning the cold-blooded murder of a cop who was abducted and killed by the Maoists, Home Minister P Chidambaram said the state governments, for the first time, were geared up to give tit for tat to the Maoists. Police on Tuesday found the decapitated body of the cop in Ranchi who was abducted by the Maoists demanding release of their three arrested leaders in exchange for the officer.

The gun battle between the Maoists and policemen lasted for more than four hours.

PM rules out deploying army to counter Maoists

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Saturday ruled out the use of army against Maoist rebels in insurgency-riddled eastern and central states. Addressing reporters in Raichur in Karnataka, Singh said police and paramilitary forces would be deployed effectively to tackle Maoists.
