Tamil Nadu government on Monday filed a defamation complaint against DMK chief M Karunanidhi over his remarks against chief minister Jayalalithaaa in connection with the controversy over the ban on Kamal Haasan's Tamil movie Vishwaroopam.

In his complaint filed before the Principal Sessions Court in Chennai, city public prosecutor ML Jegan contended that Karunanidhi's remarks appeared to be prima facie libelous.

Along with the DMK chief, the complaint was also filed against the editor, printer and publisher of a leading Chennai-based English daily which published his remarks.

Karunanidhi had said Jayalalithaa had been holding a grudge against actor Kamal Haasan since the days of AIADMK-founder and former chief minister MG Ramachandran.

The DMK chief had made the remarks during the height of the controversy over the two-week ban on the release of Haasan's movie by the state government in the wake of opposition by some Muslim outfits over its alleged anti-Muslim content.

Later the ban was lifted after Jayalalithaa stepped in, brokering a truce between Haasan and the Muslim outfits and the film was released with some scenes, to which the organisations had objected to, muted.
