A 30-year-old businessman allegedly strangled his wife and three-year-old daughter at north Delhi’s Kewal Park area near Adarsh Nagar on Saturday following a late night argument. He was angry that his wife had borne him a girl instead of a son — an argument they repeatedly had since his daughter’s birth.
Police said the accused, identified as Ajit Kumar, after strangling his wife threw her body off their second-floor apartment. Kumar then called up the police and initially tried to mislead them by claiming they had been murdered but later confessed to the crime.
Kumar’s mother Rajwati and brother Amit were also arrested on alleged charges of dowry harassment. The deceased have been identified as Shalini, 27, and her daughter Vanshika.
Police said the couple had a strained relationship since they married in 2010 and had filed for divorce in 2012. At the time, the court had given them a year to sort out their differences.
The crime came to fore at around 11.30pm on Saturday when a police team reached the crime spot and found Kumar holding his daughter close to his chest and sitting on the stairs of a local grocer’s shop.
A senior police officer said the Adarsh Nagar police station had received two calls within a gap of 20 minutes — the first made by a neighbour complaining about the fight between the couple.
“The next call was recorded 20 minutes later and was made by Kumar claiming that his daughter was murdered. When the police reached the spot, Shalini’s body was lying on the street and Kumar was seen holding his daughter. Kumar had held on to the child as if she was sleeping but later we realized that even she was killed in a similar manner,” said the senior officer.
Kumar tried to mislead the police by alleging that his wife and daughter were murdered. He then told the police he suspected his wife had killed their daughter and then committed suicide.
But initial investigations and strangulation marks around the victims necks forced him to confess.
