A tiff over tree felling between some supporters of Trinamool Congress led to the gangrape of a woman in West Bengal’s Midnapore district.

A few days ago, trees were being felled near Majurdima village in Garbeta. The woman’s husband,a  resident of the village, had protested, and the men who were cutting the trees had threatened him.

On Friday night, four locals came to the house of the man, dragged him out and beat him up. When the woman tried to shield her husband, the men dragged her off to a nearby forest. “They tortured me and when I said my husband had done nothing wrong, they raped me,” the woman said. “The miscreants also told me that if I call for help, they would harm my husband.”

“The people who had assaulted my daughter-in-law are the supporters of Trinamool Congress. So are we,” said the woman’s father-in-law.

“On the basis of a complaint lodged on Saturday, we arrested two of the men, Prabir Dule and Sashti Dule. A hunt is on for the other two,” said a police officer of Garbeta.

The local leaders of the party chose to remain silent on the issue.
