The contest at the Maharajganj Lok Sabha constituency, where a bypoll is scheduled on June 2, will be triangular.

The byelection at the constituency became necessary because of the death of sitting RJD MP Uma Shanker Singh, who had won in 2009. His son Jitendra Swami is the Congress candidate and is not being taken too lightly because he has some clout in the area.

RJD candidate Prabhu Nath Singh and Jitendra Swami are from the same caste, Rajput, and are largely expected to split their caste votes and make matters that much easier for the JD(U) challenger, PK Shahi, a Bhumihar, a former advocate general and now education minister in the Nitish Kumar government.

The administration is worried about successfully completing the poll. “The constituency has seen some prominence since 1957, when Mahendra Nath Singh was elected from the region,” recalled Ramesh Kumar Singh, a retired headmaster of Ekma.

People said they await heavyweights - CM Nitish Kumar, RJD head Lalu Prasad and Congress leaders with ‘great interest’.
