Two young men drowned in the sea off Juhu beach on Friday afternoon. This is the third incident of drowning in the past 30 days at the beach.

The two have been identified as Rajesh Choudhary, 20, and Sameer Shaikh, 17.

According to police officials, the two were swimming in the sea with three other friends when they were pulled under by the strong current.

According to Abhijeet Mandal, 18, who was part of the group, the five friends had gone for a swim to beat the heat.

All five are from Bhaiyawadi in Juhu Koliwada.

Mandal said three of them went far out to sea and were pulled under. One of them started screaming for help. Mandal pulled him out, but the other two were in too deep. They started screaming for help, but by the time a passerby jumped in, they had drowned.

“Later, the police and lifeguards came. I t happened within 10 minutes,” Mandal told HT.

A lifeguard said, “There are only five of us and three of us stick to the main beach as it is very crowded. Two take turns to patrol the beach, which is over 4-km-long. The incident occurred about 1.5 km from where we were positioned.”

“Either 50 more of us are needed or a patrolling vehicle is required to prevent such incidents,” he added.
