Two women died while 13 others sustained injuries in a stampede that took place outside Kanshi Ram Memorial, the venue of the rally of BSP chief Mayawati, on Sunday.
The injured people were rushed to the hospital where the condition of three was stated to be serious.
The incident took place near gate number 2 of the memorial when the BSP supporters started moving out after the rally. As people tried to rush out of the venue due to intense heat, a few of them stumbled.
“Some of the elderly visitors, mostly women, fell down on the stairs. They could not get up due to heavy rush and suffocated to death,” said Parshuram Tripathi, inspector at Alambagh police station.
Tripathi said one of the deceased has been identified as Shanti Devi (58), a resident of Billhaur, Kanpur City, while the identity of the other woman could not be established.
Tripathi said the injured were shifted to Lok Bandhu Hospital. Three people, who complained of suffocation and breathing problem were admitted to Balrampur Hospital.
The state government has announced Rs 2 lakh each to the kin of the two deceased. A state government spokesperson said that the government will aloo bear the medical expenses of those injured in the incident.
