Two minor girls died after falling into an open pit filled with water in Guwahati on Sunday night.

The victims, both cousins, were playing when they fell into the nearly seven-feet deep pit inside the campus of College of Veterinary Science in Khanapara.

“It is a case of accidental death due to drowning. The girls, aged 6 and 8, might have fallen into the pit while trying to retrieve something and drowned,” Himangshu Das, in-charge of Dispur police station, told HT.

Relatives of the victims said the pit was dug to clean carcasses of animals but was left uncovered, without any barriers around it.
