Two teenage brothers were killed in Karpiya village in Bareilly district on August 23 after they allegedly tried to protect their sister from an eve teaser.

A police officer said that in February the daughter of Dharampal Sahu went to a public tap installed at the village crossing to collect potable water.  A youth, Anil, who resides in the neighbourhood teased the girl. The girl complained to her family which resulted in a tiff between Dharampal’s family and that of Sripal’s — Anil’s family.

A few days back Mukesh, the second son of Sripal, molested the girl.  Narendra (18) and Ravindra (16) the brothers of the victim objected to Mukesh’s behaviour.

A scuffle broke out and on Friday night, while Narendra and Ravindra were sleeping on the terrace, Sripal’s family including his son Anil and Mukesh armed with axes and swords attacked the two brothers.

They were hacked to death and the killers escaped. Their bodies were discovered the next morning when Dharampal came to wake his sons up.
An FIR was registered against Sripal and while Mukesh has been arrested, the rest are absconding.

Talking to HT, superintendent of police (rural) said that the brothers attempt to protect their sister had led to their killing.  A manhunt has been launched to nab the remaining accused, he added.
