Within 24 hours of receiving a complaint about the online leak of the film Udta Punjab, the Mumbai police have blocked 179 links on the Internet where the leaked print was made available by unidentified accused. The blocking of another 505 sites was underway, sources said.

This is being done on an order of the Bombay high court. The Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT) is helping the crime branch block the links.

On Thursday, production house Balaji Motion Picture Limited, and other co-producers of Udta Punjab moved the high court seeking that BSNL and other internet service providers be directed to block a host of websites facilitating access to the leaked copy of the film.

Justice Gautam Patel, however, refused to pass any orders directing that the said websites be blocked completely saying the same would amount to issuing a blanket gag order. Justice Patel instead, directed the service providers to take help of the cyber cell of the Mumbai police and block access to only those pages that contain links to the illicit downloads of the film.

The producers had submitted a list of over 500 URLs or domain names of the websites that provided active links to download the leaked copy of Udta Punjab.

On the investigations in the leaked film, sources said the cyber police will first trace the person who has uploaded the picture. This will clear if the person is from the team of film-makers or is from the CBFC.

The cyber police it is learnt will also trace those who have downloaded the movie and if they are indulging in selling or uploading it again. An FIR has been registered by Phantom Films Pvt Ltd under sections 43 b (downloads, copies or extracts any data), 66 (if any person fraudulently or dishonestly does an act) of the IT Act and under the Copyright Act.
