An undertrial was killed and five people were injured in a grenade attack in the heart of Srinagar on Wednesday.
According to police, an official vehicle ferrying an undertrial Shakeel Ahmad Khasana was attacked after it left the court premises for Baramulla in north Kashmir. Khasana was among top militants of Hizbul Mujahideen and was known as bodyguard of Hizbul Mujahideen chief Syed Salahuddin.
“The vehicle was attacked near Batamaloo locality in Srinagar. A grenade was hurled, which injured the detainee and four policemen. The detainee, Shakeel Ahmad Khasana, received serious injuries and died later. The injured policemen are under treatment in a local hospital,” said SA Mujtaba, DIG, central Kashmir.
A passerby was also injured in the attack.
According to police, Khasana was a former militant and a resident of Kangan. He was arrested last year and booked under the Public Safety Act. Recently, the court had quashed the case registered under the PSA, but the police slapped the charges against him again.
“It was an attack was on a police vehicle and the militant was killed in the process. Khasana, who at one point in time was bodyguard of the HM chief, died accidentally,” Mujtaba added.
Meanwhile, Hizbul Mujahideen has claimed that Khasana was killed in a planned manner. Hizb spokesman Baleegudin told a local news agency that Shkeel Khasana was a top ranking militant and was killed in a planned encounter by the Jammu and Kashmir police.
