Highlights: More than 57% voter turnout in fifth phase of UP election

Over 1.84 crore voters will on Monday exercise their franchise to decide the fate of 617 candidates in 51 constituencies during the fifth phase of the Uttar Pradesh assembly elections.

An estimated 57.36% of 1.81 crore electorate cast their votes amid tight security in the fifth phase of polling in Uttar Pradesh on Monday.

“57.36 per cent polling was recorded till 5 PM and the figure is likely to go up as several voters waited in queues to exercise their franchise,” UP chief electoral officer T Venkatesh said.

The day-long poll process remained largely peaceful in 51 Assembly constituencies.

As many as 43 women contestants were in fray across 10 districts of Bahraich, Basti, Balrampur, Gonda, Sant Kabeernagar, Shrawasti, Siddharthnagar, Sultanpur, Faizabad and Amethi.

7:30pm: EC confirms voter turnout of 57.36% in Phase 5 of UP election.

The first four phases of UP polls this time saw voting percentage of 64%, 65%, 61.16% and 61%.

7pm: Election Commission says 4.21 crore of cash, 2.20 lakh litres of liquor worth Rs 6.43 crore, drug worth Rs 47.7 lakh and jewellery worth 53.36 lakh was seized in the fifth phase of UP election, reports ANI

5:30pm: East Uttar Pradesh records 57.36% polling till 5pm as the fifth phase nears its end.

Elaborate arrangements were made to ensure free and fair polls in one of the largest states of the nation. Six police observers have been deployed to keep an eye on security arrangements.

4:45pm: An estimated 52% of 1.81 crore electorates had cast their votes till 4pm on Monday.

4pm: The road between India- Nepal is barricaded in Badhani town, located in Siddharth Nagar district.

3:30pm: Voter turnout till 3 pm: 49.19%

3pm: While there are 52 constituencies in this phase, elections are being held in only 51 seats as the Election Commission postponed polls in Alapur after the death of SP candidate Chandrashekhar Kanauji.

1.30pm: 38.12% voting in Uttar Pradesh fifth phase assembly elections till 1 pm.

1pm: The voting was slow in the first two hours but picked up pace as the day progressed.

12.30pm: A local tough breaks open the EVM machine in the Gonda Abhaypur Balsar booth. Voting put on hold.

11.20am: 27% voting in Uttar Pradesh fifth phase assembly elections till 11 am.

11am: Many sadhus and mahants of temples came out to exercise their right in Ayodhya.

10am: 10.78% voting in Uttar Pradesh fifth phase assembly elections till 9 am.

9.15am: Long queues at polling booths in Basti district.
