A woman in Bijnor district in western Uttar Pradesh had a miscarriage after allegedly being a kicked by a police sub-inspector during a dharna on Thursday.

The woman has been admitted in the district women's hospital with internal injuries. Police tried to play down the incident.

"There was no miscarriage, but the woman suffered some complications," said Sanjay Kumar, city superintendent of police (Bijnor).

Kumar added he had visited the hospital to enquire about the woman's health.

"Action will be initiated against the policeman if he is found guilty in an inquiry," he said, blaming villagers for triggering a ruckus outside the police station in Bijnor city on Thursday that eventually turned into a clash.

Dr Alka Dixit, chief medical surgeon of the hospital, told HT over phone that the woman was stable.

Dixit added she could not say much about the case as the woman was not directly under her treatment.

On Thursday, residents of Navalpur had gone to the police station to protest against the death of a villager identified as Kake.

His body was found on the bank of the Ganges five days ago and villagers blamed one Veerpal for the death.

Police took Veerpal into custody for interrogation, but villagers demanded the slapping of murder charges against him.

Police directed the villagers to end their protest and vacate the premises of the police station.

When protesters did not budge, police resorted to a lathi charge. The agitators started pelting stones and a clash broke out.

The woman reportedly sustained injuries while trying to protect her husband.
