Uttarakhand BJP leader Rakesh Kumar Rastogi was found murdered in his car on a highway in Uttar Pradesh last evening, while the saffron party's newly-elected MP from Fatehpur constituency Sadhvi Niranjan Jyoti escaped an alleged bid on her life.
Rastogi is the third BJP leader to be killed in the past two weeks. He had gone missing on Friday morning. Senior superintendent of police Bareilly J Ravindra Gaur said, prima facie, it appears he had been killed somewhere else and his body had been dumped in Baheri.
The autopsy has shown he had been strangulated and his body bore several injuries that had caused excessive bleeding, Baheri circle officer Kalu Singh said.
He said police were trying to trace the assailants with the help of call details on Rastogi's phone and all "suspected" numbers have been put of surveillance.
Meanwhile, four men allegedly shot at Sadhvi Jyoti when she was returning from a function in Avas Vikas colony of Fatehpur district, injuring her guard Rahul Tiwari.
One of the alleged assailants, Bhanu Patel, was arrested while the other three were chased away by local residents, superintendent of police Vinod Kumar Singh said, adding old rivalry was believed to be the reason behind the attack.
But the accused, Patel, has filed a counter complaint against the MP, accusing her supporters of assaulting and injuring him and snatching his gold chain and mobile phone.
Both the cases would be investigated, the SP said.
