Two Russian tourists died and another was swept downstream after the bus they were travelling in---along with 10 other fellow countrymen---fell off a mountain road in Uttarakhand and plunged into Bhagirathi river on Tuesday.

Circle officer (Uttarkashi) PC Pant told HT the tourists had gone to Gangotri on June 6 and were returning to Rishikesh, when the vehicle skidded off the road and crashed into the river near Harshil area in Uttarkashi district.

The dead include a 55-year-old woman and a 36-year-old man. The 27-year-old man swept downstream is feared dead and his body remained untraced, Pant said.

The driver of the vehicle, Subhash, is among the 11 injured who were airlifted to the Himalayan Institute Hospital Trust in Dehradun for treatment.

On receiving news, senior officers of the district administration, police and the army rushed to the spot and assisted in rescue operations.

Representatives of the Russian Embassy were traveling from New Delhi to Dehradun, AP reported.

District magistrate Sridhar Babu Adanky blamed "bad road conditions" for the accident, AFP reported.

Uttarakhand with steep gorges and mountains was devastated last year by floods and landslides triggered by early monsoon rains, leaving some 5,500 people dead or missing.
