To the utter dismay of people here the Mussoorie MLA and the chairman of the town’s municipal board (MB) clashed over hoisting the tricolour on Independence Day on Thursday.

Mussoorie MLA Ganesh Joshi of the BJP and MB chairman Manmohan Singh Mall of the Congress hurled abuses and nearly came to blows with both claiming they had the right to hoist the flag.

While Joshi claimed that being the MLA he had the right to hoist the flag, Mall claimed that as the administrative officer had issued specific orders that the MB chairman hoist the flag this year, he was entitled to do so.

“The administrative office had issued specific orders at a meeting that the MB chairman would hoist the flag on Independence Day,” Mall told HT.

On the other hand, Joshi claimed that on previous occasions, the MLA had been hoisting the flag and therefore it was his prerogative to do so.

Meanwhile, the ugly spat between the two was widely condemned by the public.

“This incident has not only put our town but the entire country to shame. The standard of politics in our country is shameful,” lamented local resident Rajesh Kumar (name changed).

Former Mussoorie MLA, Jot Singh Gunsola also condemned the incident, saying, “On Independence Day all of us should have come together irrespective of party lines and such an incident could have been avoided.”
