Murder, torture, humiliation

A man was hacked to death and his body cut to pieces for allegedly stealing toddy in Bihar’s Vaishali district, 15km from Patna.

Police said Madai Majhi, 45, had been stealthily drinking toddy from palm trees in his neighbourhood for the last many days. Ranjit Paswan, whose campus housed the toddy trees, caught hold of Majhi, a Mahadalit, and reportedly hacked him to death.

Majhi’s mutilated body, with head and limbs severed, was found lying in a pool of blood by women grazers at Balwakauri village.

Police said Paswan was apparently annoyed over theft of toddy, which had been fetching him good money ever since the ban on its sale and consumption was lifted in dry Bihar last July.

“It seems as if Paswan lay in wait for the thief at his grove of palm trees. An unsuspecting Majhi climbed one of the trees and removed the pot in which toddy was being collected. While he was taking away the toddy pot, Paswan could have caught hold of Majhi and killed him with a sickle,” the police said.

Police said Paswan was absconding and raids were being carried out to apprehend him.
