``He was here for more than two weeks. He was treated by top neurosurgeons, we tried our level best to save him but couldn't,'' said Dr Sharma.

Dr Jalal was attacked on July 18. He had received serious bullet injuries in his head. The attack which happened in outskirts of Srinagar had left his personnel security officer dead. The militants had also fled the spot with the guard's weapons.

No militant organisation had claimed responsibility for the attack.

Though Dr Jalal was on militant hit list, the police here were investigating whether the terrorists attacked the doctor or his guard as the attack had taken place amidst series of targeted attacks on policemen.

Dr Jalal was shifted to AIIMS on July 21. While the immediate cause of death could not be ascertained, Dr Sharma said it was most likely a heart attack.
