Two minor children, one of whom was a Dalit, were tied to a pole and brutally assaulted allegedly by a vegetable vendor who suspected them of stealing vegetables.

The incident took place outside the shop in Sadar Kotwali area on Sunday.

The children, aged 10-12 years, were tied with a pole and brutally assaulted by the vendor, Nihal, police inspector Hargovind Singh said on Monday.

The matter came to light when a passerby witnessed the incident and informed police who rescued the children.

The vendor was booked on the charge of breach of peace, said police, adding the boys were handed over to their family.

While one of the children belongs to a Dalit family, the other belongs to a minority community.
