Local MLA and senior Congress leader Venod Sharma on Tuesday asserted that he would continue to strive for an Industrial Model Township (IMT) for Ambala.

The project was shelved after union minister Kumari Selja, Sharma's party colleague and local MP, had opposed it being set up on fertile land. Farmers had also agitated against it for more than a year.

Speaking in several villages to garner support for the party's November 10 Gohana rally, he said that despite the scrapping of the project, he was optimistic "after the new Land Acquisition Act, which is loaded in favour of farmers".

He added that he had been pursuing the project since 2005, and the chief minister too had declared setting-up of an IMT in Ambala: "Even the land acquisition process had started but due to vested interests the project was shelved."

Sharma said the IMT would provide jobs to thousands and "change the landscape of the city", adding that industrial growth was necessary for the development.

Talking about the recently opened Rs. 28-crore second railway overbridge near Agrasen Chowk on the Ambala-Hisar road, he said it was for the first time that a second bridge had been constructed near the existing one for the benefit of the people.
