Virbhadra gets legal notice for defamatory remarks

State co-media in charge of the Bharatiya Janata Party Hari Om Bhanot on Tuesday sent a legal notice to chief minister Virbhadra Singh for the latter's “defamatory remarks” against former CM Prem Kumar Dhumal during the election campaign for the Mandi Lok Sabha byelections.

In the notice, sent through his counsel Sandeep Thakur, Bhanot has alleged that while addressing election campaign meetings at Nichhar, Kafnu and Tapri villages in Mandi area, Virbhadra Singh had stated that Dhumal was a resident of Punjab and had sold the property of Himachal Pradesh to Punjabis at throwaway prices.

The notice has further alleged that Virbhadra Singh had falsely stated that during the BJP regime, Dhumal had initiated false cases against Congressmen.

As per the notice, Virbhadra's statements were published in various sections of the media on June 16. Claiming that these “false and untrue” statements had maligned the image of Dhumal and the BJP, Bhanot has demanded that the CM should withdraw his public statement within 15 days, failing which the BJP media in-charge would be forced to initiate legal action for defamation.
