Faced with the growing problem of Maoists, the West Bengal government has initiated a number of development projects in the worst-hit West Midnapore district.
It includes employment generation schemes and houses for poor.
In a report presented to Union Home Secretary G K Pillai,
state Chief Secretary Ashok Mohan Chakraborty said, despite disruptions caused by the Maoists, it has so far been possible to take up and execute priority schemes for employment generation, mid-day meals to school children and destitutes.
Construction of houses for poor, rural electrification, minor irrigation, soil and water conservation, drinking water supply are some of the schemes which were carried out by the administration in the district.
The report maintained that the district administration has been advised to accord high priorities to development work in left wing extremists affected areas.
It also said that Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharyya has personally reviewed the progress of these schemes in a meeting held at Midnapore on November 7 last.
The Health and Family Welfare department has set up eight special medical camps in inaccessible tribal areas in the district.
A large number of upper primary schools, anganwadi centres, animal health camps and artificial insemination centres have also been set up in Maoist affected areas, the report said.
