Away from the frantic pace of city life, the students of The Shri Ram School Aravali spent a leisurely day exploring the vivid and culturally rich forms of fine arts in the country.

On Saturday, the school organised an arts and crafts festival, Shri Srijan, to sensitise its students about India's traditions, culture and the plight of its artisans.

Conceptualised by the school's chairperson Manju Bharatram, the festival was a fundraiser event for artisans from various states who came not only to showcase their beautiful works, but also to teach students various forms of fine art.
"I did a Madhubani painting on a pot. It was fun learning the art and it took an hour to complete," said Tisya Ahuja, a Class 4
student.

The school organised several workshops in which artisans taught jewellery making, block printing, fabric painting, macramé, tie and dye, Madhubani, puppets, charpai weaving, among other skills.

Students' works were put on display during the day-long event. In addition, senior students designed garments. Each student was given one state and he or she had to design a garment using the state's ethnic fabric and traditional design.
"I had to work on banarasi brocade. I designed a saree and a kurta-pyjama," said Anika Guha, a Class 9
student.

There were also food stalls with different cuisines from the country - south Indian, north Indian, Lucknowi, Goan, Maharashtrian, Gujrati, among others.

"Through this event, we wanted children to know about Indian art. These days, everyone wears Western brands… there is a need to impart knowledge about our ethnic style too," said Sudha Sahay, principal of the senior school.
Every year, the school takes up a cause and organises a festival to create awareness about the same. "Last year, it was about Science," added Sahay.
