For the past four days, the Delhi Police has been engaging in discussions with Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) chief Arvind Kejriwal to convince him about the merits of personal security — but to no avail.

Far from giving his nod for accepting personal security, the capital’s chief-minister-to-be is refusing to even acknowledge written communications through which the security department of the Delhi Police keeps writing to him.
“We first wrote to him on December 23 to offer security to which he replied stating that ‘God was his protector’. We sent him another letter on December 24 to which he hasn’t replied to date,” said a senior police officer.
The police admitted they would now try their luck for the third — and probably the last — time on December 28, that is the day Kejriwal takes oath as the Delhi chief minister at the Ramlila Maidan.
If that too fails, sources said, Delhi police would write to the ministry of home affairs (MHA) for their intervention in the matter.

“We are completely equipped to provide security to Mr. Kejriwal and will provide it as and when he agrees to it,” said JK Sharma, special commissioner of police (security).
Meanwhile, if Kejriwal and his six legislators who are set to become ministers, stick to their decision of not taking security cover, as many as 100 security personnel who were engaged in the job will be relieved from their duties, said police.
The services of these 100 security personnel can be taken for curbing crime or patrolling the streets in the city. Though the number is not very big, a police officer said, these security officials, who are professional shooters, can be diverted to other important wings of the Delhi police like the Special Cell or the Crime Branch.

“Given the good number of crimes that take place everyday in the city, we need more policemen to keep the criminals at bay. We have been requesting the home ministry for increasing our strength. But if our police personnel who are engaged in providing security to VIPs are relieved from their present job, they can best be utilized in law and order functions and ensuring safety for women in the city,” said the officer.
Kejriwal has also refused to take security from UP police at his house in Kaushambi, Ghaziabad.
