A woman in Odisha’s Jagatsinghpur district castrated a man after he allegedly attempted to rape her. The 19-year-old man, who has been admitted to a hospital in a critical condition, claimed he was attacked without any provocation.
The 25-year-old alleged victim and the 19-year-old man are from the same village in Tirtol police station area of the district, about 120 km east of Bhubaneswar.
They have lodged two separate FIRs and the police have started an investigation.
In her complaint to the police, the woman, a mother of four children, said the man accosted her when she had gone to collect banana leaves near a temple on Monday evening. When the man tried to rape her, she chopped off his testicles with the knife she was carrying to cut banana leaves.
In his complaint, the man claimed the woman practiced witchcraft and had cut off his testicles after luring him to an isolated place. Police have, however, ruled out the witchcraft angle.
“No one has been arrested so far. The police have recorded the statements and is investigating if the assault was an act of self defence,” said Jagatsinghpur superintendent of police Satyabrata Bhoi.
