Woman courted through SMS, raped, thrown off car

A man who promised marriage to a woman through text messages and phone calls, allegedly raped her thrice when he met her and then threw her off a car in Odisha’s Kandhamal district.


The man and the two accomplices were arrested on Friday.

The accused, Sushant Kumar Swain, from Bhejiput in adjoining Ganjam district sent SMS’ and made phone calls to the woman from Karanjia in Mayurbhanj district promising to marry her, sub-divisional police officer (SDPO) of G Udayagiri, S Bariha said on Saturday.

He asked the woman to come to Bhubaneswar on July 9 where he met her and allegedly raped her thrice, Bariha said.

Swain then took the woman in a car and was suppose to proceed to Bhanjanagar but instead,drove toward Phulbani.

He and two of his accomplices then pushed the woman off the car at Kalinga Ghati, Bariha said.

The woman was rescued by road construction labourers and admitted to a hospital at G Udayagiri where she was medically examined, he said.
