Woman driver of luxury car held for knocking down man

The woman driver of a luxury car was arrested in Chennai on Saturday for allegedly fatally knocking down a 45-year-old man at the busy Rajiv Gandhi Salai.

The incident occurred early this morning when the speeding Audi car allegedly hit Munusamy, a carpenter, before speeding off, police said.

The victim was waiting to cross the road when the car hit him, throwing him in the air under the impact, they said, adding, he died on the spot.

However, the woman did not stop and sped away. Members of the public gave chase and managed to stop the car at some distance from the accident spot, they said.

The woman was subjected to a medical examination to ascertain if she was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the incident, police said.

She was later remanded to judicial custody, while the car has also been impounded, they added.

Munusamy is survived by his wife and two children.
