A woman was gang-raped and tortured before being murdered in an Uttar Pradesh village, barely 8km from Jabrauli where former US President Bill Clinton visited on Thursday.
The woman's body, with injury marks on the face, eyes and other parts, was found lying in a poll of blood outside the primary school in Balsinghkheda village of Mohanlalganj tehsil of Lucknow in the morning.
Senior police and civilian officials had been overseeing arrangements for Clinton's visit to Mohanlalganj for the past two days.
The crime once again underscored chinks in women's security in the state that has gained notoriety for a surge in the number of crimes against women, including the Badaun incident, over the past few months.
It was learnt the police were alerted about the woman's body by a village guard, Nokhelal. Her identity wasn't ascertained till reports last came in.
"The school is barely 100 meters from the village. It is surprising that nobody heard the woman's screams when she was being subjected to cruelty," said senior superintendent of police Praveen Kumar, who, along with Lucknow zone inspector general of police Subash Chandra, visited the crime scene.
Kumar said the body was sent for post-mortem examination, adding preliminary probe suggested the assailants were known to the victim and had brought her to the deserted primary school.
He said the police had got some leads in the case and a few crucial evidences had been collected from the spot.
