Pooja Singh, the private tutor who was caught on CCTV beating up a three-and-half-year-old child in the Lake Town area on Tuesday, also used to regularly beat her own son and nephew, police have learnt.

“She is a psychotic character who used to torture children. This had strained her relation with her brother whose child she had bashed up,” said a senior police officer.

The police are yet to arrest Singh and her husband but have tracked down her brother Abhishek Khemka, a resident of Rajarhat area, and have interrogated him.

Investigation revealed that the accused had given a fake address to her employers and that the SIM card Singh had been using for the last eight years was registered in her brother’s name.

On Wednesday, the police traced down the two-storied house where Singh lived along with her husband and child. Locals claimed the duo had changed houses at least four times in the last few years and that they had fled even before news of the incident began to spread across the media.

While Pooja has been accused of torturing the child and stealing money, her husband has been accused of threatening the family and asking them to refrain from complaining to the police.
