The return of the injury-prone 38-year-old Delhi star has evoked mixed reactions. At a time when the emphasis has been on the young, the choice of Ashish Nehra has baffled quite a few. At this rate, will Indian selectors recall Ajit Agarkar, joked a cricket fan on Twitter.
In T20 Rohit Sharma should be made Captain.— Arjuna (@unheardb4) October 1, 2017
Dinesh Karthik is in team for doing what?
Ashish Nehra's expiry date can create a world record!
Why has Ashish Nehra been picked for Australia T20s? Left arm quick needed yes, but not a 38-year old. That's a backward step.— सज्जन लौंडा (@Sajjanlaunda) October 2, 2017
According to PTI, Nehra was picked because he can be a deadly weapon if “fit”.
The agency has quoted a Board of Control for Cricket in India source, saying: “Ashish if fit was due for a comeback as and when there would have been a three match T20 series. There isn’t anyone craftier than Ashish and when it comes to his selection, it’s about fitness and not form. Check records, Ashish has never been dropped because of poor form.”
India so tired of smashing up the Aussies they've picked Ashish Nehra for the T20s...rumour Ajit Agakar coming back too... #indvaus— Innocent Bystander (@InnoBystander) October 1, 2017
Having walloped Australia 4-1 in the ODIs, India will have their tails up when the three-match T20 series starts in Ranchi on October 7. Ashish Nehra, Jasprit Bumrah and Bhuvneshwar Kumar form a telling troika backed by the young spin twins, Yuzvendra Chahal and Kuldeep Yadav.
Ashish Nehra’s longevity in cricket has been an ‘inspiration’ said a cricket fan but another has reacted to a report saying that 30-year-old Suresh Raina, a limited overs cricket specialist, failed to make the cut for failing a fitness test.
If Suresh Raina fails a test, how come Nehra passes it? Reports also suggest that bowlers like Amit Mishra were unfit for selection.
Nehra’s career has been hindered by injuries. Sunrisers Hyderabad missed him during a crucial stage of the IPL this year. Ashish Nehra played six matches for SRH and his best return was a 3 for 42 against Kings XI Punjab in Mohali on April 28.
@BCCI u say Suresh Raina did not pass the fitness test. Question is. How did Kedar Jadhav or for a matter of fact Ashish Nehra did? I doubt— Samrat (@samrat1874) October 2, 2017
Against England in February, Nehra went wicketless at Bangalore’s Chinnaswamy Stadium. His three overs cost 24 runs. India won by 75 runs after Chahal took six and Bumrah three.
If Ashish Nehra makes into the playing XI, he will be only the 8th Indian with an International career of 18+ years. https://t.co/aQyKCKwc2L— Sampath Bandarupalli (@SampathStats) October 1, 2017
In the current squad, Ashish Nehra will be the longest serving Indian cricketer, having made his international (Test) debut in 1998-99. Nehra played his first ODI in 2001 and took one wicket on his T20 debut versus Sri Lanka in December 2009.
One of Sourav Ganguly’s favourite bowlers, Ashish Nehra certainly has impressed Virat Kohli. Only longevity and faith have to translate into performance. Nehra has 34 wickets from 26 T20 internationals at an average of 21.44.
