17:10 hrs IST: Two overs to go. Will Sri Lanka survive or will India take one more wicket?
17:07 hrs IST: Mathews cuts a short ball to the deep point fence and he brings up his 27th fifty. It has been a fighting knock but Sri Lanka are in deep trouble.
17:05 hrs IST: The scoreboard is 143/5, but Sri Lanka are effectively six down as Asela Gunaratne will not bat in this match due to a fractured thumb.
17:02 hrs IST: WICKET! Brilliant catch from Mukund. Dickwella stabs at the delivery and Mukund at silly point takes a brilliant catch. Niroshan Dickwella c Mukund b Ashwin 8 (15).
16:56 hrs IST: Stumps may be approaching but Mathews will be aggressive. He slams a boundary to long on and then he connects with the reverse sweep to deep point for boundary.
16:54 hrs IST: Dickwella gets going with a boundary to fine leg, that ball was too much on the leg side.
16:50 hrs IST: Mathews holds the key for Sri Lanka. If he stays in for a long period of time, he can dent India. However, they still face an enormous task.
16:45 hrs IST: WICKET! What a way to go. Tharanga again advances down the track and taps it to the off side, this time Mukund is alert and fires the throw to Saha, it is a bit wide and Tharanga dives back in as the keeper whips the bails off, but the bat has bounced and is in the air when the wickets are being broken, Tharanga has to depart. Very unfortunate. Upul Tharanga run out (Wriddhiman Saha) 64.

16:35 hrs IST: Almost a run-out. Tharanga skips down the track and taps it to silly point, Abhinav Mukund does not collect it cleanly and Tharanga has to dive back to the crease to make it. Had it been a direct hit, he was a goner.
16:34 hrs IST: Ashwin and Jadeja are rushing through their overs. Mathews and Tharanga are batting well as they look to get through the rest of the day unscathed.
16:31 hrs IST: Mathews tries the reverse sweep but is hit on the helmet. That is the extra bounce from Ashwin. Sri Lanka are trying to be aggressive.
16:28 hrs IST: With Jadeja into the attack, the over-rate has increased. With spinners operating, a breakthrough might not be far away.
16:24 hrs IST: Appeal for an LBW but not given! India go for the review and the ball is only clipping leg. So the umpire’s decision stays. However, under the new rules, the team does not lose a review if it is umpire’s call.
16:21 hrs IST: Jadeja is getting some turn and bounce and Tharanga is almost snapped up at leg slip by the extra bounce. He stabbed at that real hard. Replays in: No bat but straight off the pad.
16:16 hrs IST: The partnership is worth 43 runs. Sri Lanka are 111/3 but Ashwin is troubling them with some bounce and spin.
16:12 hrs IST: Mathews drives a full ball past cover for a lovely boundary. He follows it up next ball with a top-edged six. The scoring rate continues to remain good. Both batsmen are stringing together a solid stand as Sri Lanka look to stay afloat.
16:08 hrs IST: Still no signs of Jadeja and Pandya. The debutant might not be a bad option as he can pound the pitch
16:00 hrs IST: Mathews survives a close LBW shout off Ashwin. If that had been reviewed, he would have still been not out as the original decision was not out.
15:51 hrs IST: Tharanga has played a blinder. He is the only one who is on top of the conditions. After 20 overs, they are 79/3.
15:43 hrs IST: Sri Lanka are 72/3 after 17 overs

15:22 hrs IST: Sri Lanka are 64/1 in 13 overs with Tharanga batting on 44. He is closing in on another half-century.

15:15 hrs IST: Sri Lanka have reached 48/1 after 10 overs
15:11 hrs IST: Upul Tharanga is batting quite confidentally here.
15:04 hrs IST: Ashwin starts off steadily in the final session. At The Oval, England have chosen to bat vs South Africa and Joe Root’s side have included three debutants.
14:58 hrs IST: Welcome back for the final session. This could be the period when Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja come into the attack. How will Sri Lanka cope with that?
14:40 hrs IST: At Tea, Sri Lanka are 38/1. Good batting from Upul Tharanga but India very much on top.
14:36 hrs IST: Three fours in one over by Upul Tharanga off Umesh Yadav. Sri Lanka have reached 32/1 after six overs. This is a great start.
14:31 hrs IST: Dhanushka Gunathilaka and Upul Tharanga are batting steadily. Only a couple of minutes left for the Tea session. Sri Lanka would not want to lose a wicket now.
14:22 hrs IST: Umesh Yadav recently won praise for his bowling. It was from none other than the Metronomic genius, Glenn McGrath.
14:19 hrs IST: WICKET! Magnificent inswinger from Yadav and Karunaratne is trapped in front. The batsman reviews it. It is such a poor review that the third player has fun. Karunaratne LBW Umesh Yadav 2.
14:14 hrs IST: Upul Tharanga gets going with a boundary first ball from Umesh Yadav. Sri Lanka really need a good opening stand as they will be without a batsman in Asela Gunaratne.
14:11 hrs IST: Mohammed Shami opens the bowling with three slips and two gullies. He is getting some seam movement but Dimuth Karunaratne plays him well.
14:06 hrs IST: While action is about to resume in Galle, over at The Oval, England are all set to play their 100th Test against South Africa. Great moment.
14:04 hrs IST: The Indian team are in the huddle. This is a tricky 35 minutes that Sri Lanka have to negotiate before the Tea break.
13:56 hrs IST: WICKET! Pandya falls for exactly 50 and India are all out for exactly 600. What an innings this has been and India are on top.
13:51 hrs IST: What a moment! Pandya nudges Herath to the on side and takes a single to get to a fifty on debut. The whole dressing room rises. What a moment for the youngster. Excellent knock.
13:49 hrs IST: Pandya is on fire. He mauls a short ball to the cover fence but Umesh Yadav ends the over in style by blasting a full ball straight down the ground for a big six.
13:47 hrs IST: India’s total is now the highest score by an away team in the first innings of a Test in Sri Lanka.
13:43 hrs IST: Vicious bouncer from Lahiru Kumara and Umesh Yadav is hit flush on the helmet. That will not help matters when Sri Lanka come out to bat.
13:38 hrs IST: WICKET! The fun ends for Shami as he top-edges the pull and is caught at deep backward square leg. Upul Tharanga makes no mistake. Ends a good partnership. Shami c Tharanga b Lahiru Kumara 30.
13:32 hrs IST: Pandya 3, Shami 3: The six count that is. It looks like both are in a competition for most sixes. Shami thrashes Herath down the ground again. It was a mis-hit but it just carried over the man stationed near the boundary.
13:28 hrs IST: Brilliant from Pandya. Pradeep bowls it too full on the pads and the batsman hoicks it to the deep backward square leg fence. He is nearing his fifty. The partnership between him and Shami has also gone past 50.
13:20 hrs IST: In the air but safe! Shami top-edges the pull shot but it lands safely at mid wicket. Pradeep unlucky as Sri Lanka continue to leak runs.
13:13 hrs IST: Shami matches Pandya for aggression as he blasts Herath down the ground for his second six. This is clean hitting.
13:11 hrs IST: Pandya began the over with a six, now he ends it with a six. This is great batting as India close in on 550.
13:08 hrs IST: In 122 overs, we did not have a single six. Now, we have two. Pandya top-edges a pull off Pradeep but the ball sails into the deep mid wicket fence.
13:04 hrs IST: Pandya continues to hang in there and he pulls this short ball to deep mid wicket. Mohammed Shami joins in the fun as he launches Herath over long on for a big six. Interestingly, this is the first six of the match.
12:58 hrs IST: WICKET! Brilliant ball from Pradeep. Comes round the wicket and slants a yorker in on middle stump, Jadeja is unable to dig it out and the middle pole is detonated out of the ground. Ravindra Jadeja b Nuwan Pradeep 15.
12:53 hrs IST: Pandya is riding his luck here. Short ball from Pradeep, Pandya goes for the pull but gets a top edge that goes over Dickwella for a boundary. India 515/7.
12:50 hrs IST: DROPPED! Pandya gets a life on debut. Herath gets this delivery to straighten outside off and Pandya jabs at it, the edge is dropped at first slip by Dimuth Karunaratne.
12:45 hrs IST: Thanks to Dhawan’s aggressive knock, India can afford to take their time in reaching a score in the range of 550-600. However, knowing Pandya and Jadeja, they will want to get it quickly.
12:43 hrs IST: Great start to the second session. Jadeja punches a back of a length delivery from Pradeep to the deep cover fence.
12:40 hrs IST: Welcome back for the second session. Will Hardik Pandya dazzle on debut? Will Ravindra Jadeja take India past 600?
12:04 hrs IST: That will be lunch on day 2 and India have ended on 503/7. Can Ravindra Jadeja and Hardik Pandya provide some fireworks in the second session? Join us in 40 minutes to find out.
12:00 hrs IST: Ravindra Jadeja gives himself some room as he crashes a square cut to the deep cover fence. India go past 500.
11:54 hrs IST: WICKET! Pradeep gets his maiden five-wicket haul. Short ball and just outside leg stump, Ashwin looks to help it down to fine leg but gets a glove and is taken by Dickwella. Great stuff from Pradeep. R Ashwin c Dickwella b Pradeep 47.
11:51 hrs IST: What a way to get off the mark in Tests. Rangana Herath, all of 384 wickets, is given no respect as he dances down the track and thumps the lofted drive to long on.
11:47 hrs IST: WICKET! Herath finally gets a wicket. Flat and full delivery on leg stump, Saha dances down the track and looks to go over mid on, but is cramped for room and he toe-ends the lofted shot to mid on. Enter Hardik Pandya. Wriddhiman Saha c Dilruwan Perera b Herath 16.
11:44 hrs IST: Almost a run-out! Ashwin had tucked it to leg gully and had wandered out of the crease. The fielder has a shy at the striker’s end but misses. Ashwin would have been a goner.
11:41 hrs IST: Saha matches Ashwin for aggression. He connects with the slog sweep and the ball blazes away to the deep mid wicket fence. India 488/5.
11:39 hrs IST: The 50-run stand is up between Saha and Ashwin. The Tamil Nadu off-spinner has been the main aggressor in this stand as he nears a fifty.
11:37 hrs IST: Shikhar Dhawan has emulated Sir Don Bradman after his brilliant 190. Find out how here.
11:32 hrs IST: India are making smooth progress. Sri Lanka’s good work of having picked Pujara and Rahane early has all been undone with this stand.
11:27 hrs IST: In the air but safe! Short and sharp delivery from Lahiru Kumara, Saha fends and the ball hits the glove but goes over the slip fielder for a boundary to third man.
11:24 hrs IST: Ashwin is using his height to great effect here. Too full and wide and he creams the drive to the deep extra cover fence. He is closing in on his fifty
11:20 hrs IST: STAT ATTACK! India have not lost a single Test after posting a total of 450. So, 1-0 up already for India? Only time will tell.
11:16 hrs IST: Ashwin continues to find the boundary. Quicker ball from Dilruwan Perera but short of length, the batsman hangs back and late cuts it to the third man fence. India 463/5.
11:11 hrs IST: Ashwin continues to find the boundary and his strike-rate is close to 100 at the moment. This quick knock really sets up India. They may want to bat only once in the match.
11:04 hrs IST: Another boundary for Ashwin as he carves a slightly short delivery past point for a boundary. India 451/5 and Herath continues to leak runs.
11:01 hrs IST: Superb batting from Ashwin. Herath floats a tossed up delivery outside off, Ashwin uses his height and leans into the drive to get it past the fielder for a boundary.
10:58 hrs IST: Saha gets off the mark in style. Overpitched from Lahiru Kumara, the wicketkeeper drills it to the long on fence. Superb stroke. India 441/5.

10:52 hrs IST: Some balls are zipping through from the deck while others are leaping up slightly. Can India push past 500?
10:48 hrs IST: WICKET! Kumara strikes first ball of his new spell. Full ball outside off and luring Rahane into the drive, the batsman edges it to first slip and a good catch is taken. Ajinkya Rahane c Karunaratne b Lahiru Kumara 57.
10:46 hrs IST: Lahiru Kumara replaces Nuwan Pradeep. He was wayward on day 1, will he get his act together on day 2?
10:41 hrs IST: Ashwin gets off the mark with a nicely punched boundary through cover. Sri Lanka are not helping themselves by bowling some loose deliveries. India 431/4.
10:40 hrs IST: Missed out on all the action of day 1? Here are the highlights.
10:35 hrs IST: Play and miss from Ravichandran Ashwin, promoted over Hardik Pandya, Ravindra Jadeja and Wriddhiman Saha. Great over from Pradeep comes to an end. India 423/4.
10:33 hrs IST: WICKET! Brilliant ball from Pradeep and he gets his fourth. Good length ball and straightening in the corridor outside off, Pujara can only poke at it and the edge is taken. Cheteshwar Pujara c Niroshan Dickwella b Nuwan Pradeep 153.
10:28 hrs IST: Brilliant from Rahane as he dances down the track to clobber Herath down the ground to bring up his 12th fifty. He already has one century against Sri Lanka and he will be determined to join the part.
10:24 hrs IST: 150 for Pujara! Pradeep bowls it on the pads and the batsman glances it to fine leg for a boundary. Magnificent effort from Che! He raises his bat and the smile gets broader
10:20 hrs IST: Sri Lanka have come out with far more intent than on day 1. Pradeep is troubling the batsmen with swing and pace while Herath is getting some spin.
10:16 hrs IST: FOUR! Lovely shot by Rahane! Full ball and in the slot outside off, the batsman presses forward and creams the drive to the deep cover boundary.
10:15 hrs IST: It has gotten slightly darker in Galle and the ground staff are getting ready. That is normally a sign that rain is not too far around the corner.
10:13 hrs IST: There was some turn on offer from Herath and that squared Pujara up. It was a great ball and the first signs that the pitch could be affording some turn. Ashwin and Jadeja will be watching this closely.
10:10 hrs IST: Appeal for a catch but not given. Sri Lanka review. Poor call that from Niroshan Dickwella the keeper. There is no spike on UltraEdge and there is a considerable gap between bat and ball. Move on!
10:08 hrs IST: Nuwan Pradeep continues to trouble the Indian batsmen. He has been the only Sri Lankan bowler to trouble them. He lures Ajinkya Rahane into a false stroke with an away swinger. India 404/3.
10:02 hrs IST: Pujara again comes down the track and flicks a flighted ball to deep square leg for a couple. With this, Pujara has notched up his highest individual score against Sri Lanka, going past the 145 which he made at th SSC in the 2015 series.
10:00 hrs IST: Dilruwan Perera opens the bowling and India bring up the 400 with the first ball of the day. Pujara has also equalled his highest score against Sri Lanka.
09:58 hrs IST: Rahane and Pujara stride out to the middle. Slightly cloudy skies at the moment.
09:55 hrs IST: Will Pujara get to 200? Will India notch up a massive total and declare? The answer is just five minutes away as Pujara and Rahane prepare to take strike.
09:49 hrs IST: Out of Pujara’s 12 centuries, there are three double tons and two 150-plus scores. Thus, when he scores a century, he makes it count.
09:41 hrs IST: Nuwan Pradeep took all the three wickets to fall on day 1. Rangana Herath, who has been Sri Lanka’s trump card, lacked any penetration yesterday. To compound Sri Lanka’s woes, they are a batsman short with Asela Gunaratne ruled out of this match due to a fractured thumb.
09:34 hrs IST: With Dhawan and Pujara dominating the show, let us not forget Ajinkya Rahane who has moved closer to a fifty. His travails against spin, especially in the last year, means that this knock assumes tremendous importance.
09:28 hrs IST: Pujara’s highest score in Sri Lanka is 145*. He can go past that mark today and he has the chance to become the third Indian batsmen to score a double ton in Sri Lanka.
09:20 hrs IST: On the other hand, Sri Lanka’s body language was deflated by Dhawan’s tour-de-force and his 253-run stand with Pujara. Can they put in a better show today or will India run away with the game?
09:16 hrs IST: Pujara, on the other hand, has been in great form and he will be eying his fourth double hundred. The stage is set for India to post a mammoth score.
09:08 hrs IST: Dhawan shattered some records on day one of the Galle Test. Apart from his 190 being his highest individual score, he also scored 126 runs in one session, which is the second most behind Virender Sehwag.
09:00 hrs IST: A warm welcome to day 2 of the first Test between India and Sri Lanka from Galle. Day 1 belonged totally to India, with Shikhar Dhawan and Cheteshwar Pujara slamming centuries. Dhawan, in particular, brought back memories of his dazzling debut against Australia in Mohali 2013 but was unlucky to miss out on a double ton.
On Day 1, Pujara and Shikhar Dhawan (190) put on 253 for the second wicket -- India’s highest second-wicket stand against Sri Lanka -- after skipper Virat Kohli won the toss and chose to bat under an overcast sky.
Dhawan struck 31 boundaries in a blazing 168-ball knock and Pujara joined in with an unbeaten 144 to take the visitors to a huge total.
Ajinkya Rahane (39) was Pujara’s partner when stumps were drawn. Pacer Nuwan Pradeep was the most successful bowler for Sri Lanka, taking all three wickets to fall for 64. However, Sri Lanka suffered a major blow when all-rounder Asela Gunaratne broke his thumb trying a catch. He is expected to miss the rest of the three-Test series.
Opening day honours
Earlier, Dhawan took the opening day honours, celebrating his return to Test cricket with a breathtaking array of shots. It was the second time he had scored a century in a single Test session, having made 187 on his debut against Australia -- including 106 in one session. Dhawan scored 126 off just 90 balls between lunch and tea, leaving Virender Sehwag as the other Indian batsman to score more runs in a single session.
The 31-year-old got a standing ovation from teammates in the dressing room upon completing his fifth Test century. The century was especially sweet for Dhawan, who was made to sit out of India’s last 11 Tests following a dip in form.
