A drowsy 26-year-old killed one pedestrian and injured 21 others after he fell asleep at the wheel outside Sion hospital on Saturday night. Six of the injured are critical.
Kunal Nanda, a Chakala resident, lost control of his Maruti Alto and swerved onto the pavement, where the victims were waiting for a State Transport bus to Raigad.
Ramesh Palkar (26) was killed in the crash; his brother Dinesh (35) was severely injured and has had to have a leg amputated.
Their brother Anil (22), who was also at the spot, has filed a police complaint.
Nanda, who was immediately arrested, was released on a bail surety of Rs 20,000 on Sunday.
“All sections under which he was charged are bailable,” said a police officer, adding that Nanda had admitted in his statement that he dropped off at the wheel. The officer, however, added that Nanda had been speeding.
“He was not drunk,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police Sanjay Baviskar.
The victims’ relatives are enraged. “He was driving so fast, some people were stuck under the car and we had to overturn it to get them out,” said Harshad Bhure (17), whose younger brother Rahul (15) and father Lakshman Bhure (55) were injured and are in hospital.
