ONE PERSON was killed while three others were injured in a blast in an under-construction office of Airtel on the top floor of Centre Point complex in New Market on Thursday.
The compressor of the air-conditioning system in the office reportedly burst causing the mishap. The blast was so strong that entire office lay shattered.
The incident occurred at around 10:30 am. The blast was so strong that it was heard all over the New Market and even faraway.
Police and residents rushed to the spot to find the body of a worker, Manoj Sharma, 28, a native of Indore, lying in a mutilated state inside the office. Manoj was an expert in air-conditioner installation.
Over a dozen labourers were working in the Airtel office when the blast occurred. Three others, Mukesh Verma, 26, resident of Kabutarkhana (Indore), Shyamal Das, 30, resident of West Bengal and Narayan Jagtap, 19, resident of Mumbai, were injured. They were rushed to the Hamidia Hospital.
The fire tender also rushed the spot. Soon after the blast a minor fire had reportedly occurred but this could not be confirmed. However, the office was nearly devastated and blood was splattered all around. The office was nearly complete and the finishing work was going on.
Police said air-conditioner installation work was going on in the office of Airtel when the blast occurred. The police reached the office immediately as Centre Point is located near the TT Nagar police station.
There was sensation in the area soon after the blast. Forensic experts also examined the spot but it was still not known what led to the blast. The TT Nagar police have begun investigations into what caused such a blast and after negligence is established, a case will be registered.
Meanwhile, the company said workers were undertaking air-conditioner installation work at its Mobile Switching Centre when the mishap occurred. In a press released issued today, Airtel said workers of Ms Emerson Network Power Private Limited were undertaking the air-conditioner installation. The company has further said that it was cooperating with the investigators.
