The Kerala Police on Sunday arrested a 34-year-old man from Kannur district, 450 km north of Thiruvananthapuram, for suspected links with the militants in Jammu and Kashmir.
The police picked up Abdul Jaleel, a house painter, on the basis of calls he received on his mobile phone from J&K, including some from the militants killed in a recent encounter in the Lolab valley in Kashmir. Jaleel is an active member of the National Development Front, a fundamentalist organization.
“We have solid evidence to prove that Jaleel was in touch with some militants killed in the recent encounter. Soon after the encounter he changed his number,” Kannur police superintendent S. Sreejith said.
Last week, the J&K police had sent details of two photo I-cards, with Kerala addresses, recovered from militants killed in Lolab valley. The cards were found to be forged. The police suspect’s Jaleel hand in forgery.
