An Assam Rifles jawan was killed and five others were injured in an encounter with suspected insurgents of People's Liberation Army (PLA) in Churachandpur district of Manipur, official reports said on Tuesday.
The heavily-armed insurgents attacked an Assam Rifles patrol at Telkhotjang under Singhat police station, about 100 kms south of Imphal, on Monday, the reports said.
The personnel of the central para military force also retaliated and in the ensuing heavy exchange of fire, an Assam Rifles jawan was killed and five others were injured, it said.
The injured had been taken to the Army hospital at Leimakhong near Imphal, it said adding that casualty, if any, on the side of the insurgents was not immediately known.
Sources in the district police station said insurgents of different outfits including PLA and United National Liberation Front (UNLF) had been very active in the recent months in the district bordering Mizoram state and Myanmar.
