With five militants killed in a three-day counter-infiltration operation launched by the army along the Line of Control (LoC) in Handwara area of north Kashmir, the number of militant casualities in various border skirmishes has gone to 10 in the past 72 hours.
"In the past 72 hours, 10 militants have been killed in various encounters with the militants," said Lt Gen Gurmeet Singh, general officer commanding (GOC) 15 Corps in Srinagar.
"On Thursday, in the thick jungles of Hafruda area, five militants of LeT group were killed. The operation had started on July 29. Two of our gallant soldiers, who were injured, are stable," Lt Gen Singh said.
"Since July 29, there have been three infiltration attempts and two contacts with terrorists in the hinterlands as well. Two operations are still in progress. One encounter happened in the Lolab area on Thursday morning," he said.
Another counter-insurgency operation was on in the Tangdar sector, while another operation is in progress at 12,000 feet, the GOC said, adding that the area was a rugged terrain and weather bad.
A group of heavily armed militants tried to sneak into the Kashmir Valley from across the border in the wee hours of Tuesday but troops thwarted their attempt, Lt Gen Singh said.
Four militants, who tried to infiltrate, of Jaish-e-Mohammad were killed in the Macchil sector on Tuesday, while an ultra was shot dead in the Keran sector of Kupwara district on Monday. "One more militants is believed to have been killed and another is injured seriously," he said.
Earlier, five militants were killed in a failed bid in the Keran sector on July 9.
The GOC dedicated the operational success to the security forces, intelligence network and people for providing with the intelligence and support.
