10-year-old boy the biggest victim

He is a victim of the Srinagar sex scandal, much like the young women who were sold on the body mart. Ten-year-old Abid, however, hasn't found too many takers for his cause.

Abid is the son of Sabeena — the woman alleged to be the kingpin of the flesh racket that serviced the who's who of the state's corridors of power.

The stigma — his father Hameed is also behind bars for his involvement in the same scam — has landed Abid into a state-run orphanage. Abid was in school in Habbakadal when the police swooped on his parents, took them into custody and sealed their house.

When he returned from school, his grandmother and uncle took Abid to their house. But things changed when an angry mob razed Sabeena's house at Habbakadal on May 5. His grandmother and uncle threw him out.

Abid found no defenders among NGOs and other social activists.

A stranger moved by his wails guided him to his mother lodged at Women's Police Station, Ram Bagh. The sobbing child hugged his mother for a while but had to leave soon.  A woman police officer took pity on Abid and took him to her home. He stayed there for a week. She contacted all the relatives of Abid but nobody was ready to own him.

Even the politicians and bureaucrats whose names have been dragged into the scam are luckier. At least their relatives came out with their heads high to rally behind them. Can someone speak out for this child?
