The police have nabbed a 10-year-old boy for trying to steal jewellery worth Rs 1 crore.

The boy was caught while trying to steal a bag full of jewellery from a marriage party at Vasundhara in Ghaziabad on late Sunday night.

The incident happened at 10 pm on Sunday night at Red-Carpet party lawns at Vasundhara where the wedding of a non-resident Indian (NRI) doctor was underway.

The relatives had put all the gold and diamond jewellery inside a bag and had placed the bag over a sofa at the party venue.

"The bag contained gold and diamond jewellery valued around Rs 1 crore. The minor was instructed by her mother to steal the bag and run away," said Raghubir Lal, senior superintendent of police (SSP).

The boy was spotted and nabbed by women police-station in-charge Alka Agarwal, who was present at the party venue.

"The child and his mother had arrived at Ghaziabad from Nizamuddin area of Delhi and his mother had her eye on the bag of valuables from the very beginning. We are trying to trace her," the SSP added.

Police officials said that the minor's mother, Ranu Devi, was originally a resident of Kharia in Madhya Pradesh and frequently attended such parties in search of valuables.

"The mother had trained her child for the act. We will nab her soon and are hopeful that she will disclose more thefts undertaken by the child on her instructions," the SSP said. The child was nabbed and taken to Indirapuram police-station by women police officials.
