The Majumdar family got a call on Thursday from the police telling them that the body of their 10-year-old autistic son has been found in Mithi River at Kurla.

Ajay was missing since December 29 from his Mahim residence.

The family, which had lodged a missing complaint with the police, came rushing to Kurla. His father, Avinash, identified the body and was allowed to take it home immediately.

“The child’s body was in a very bad condition and passersby who spotted it floating in the water informed us about it,” said Police Sub-Inspector Mahesh Nivapkar.

On the day of the incident, the family assumed Ajay was going to their neighbor’s house when he got out from his home early in the morning, the family said.

But later when they could not find him they lodged a police complaint and stuck his posters in the locality.

“Since he was autistic we had tied a tag around his neck with his name and phone number in case he went missing,” said Avinash.

The police used the tag to identify him and contact his family.

“We wanted him to learn and grow like other children and he was studying in a special school at Sewri since he was six,” said the boy’s mother Apurva.

The youngest of three siblings, he used to go for daily walks with his two sisters towards Mithi River in Mahim.
