A 10-year-old boy died of bullet injuries on Wednesday when a gang of criminals opened fire at the police in Pilkhuwa area along national highway 24, the police said.

Two sub-inspectors and a local resident were also hurt in the firing.

The incident occurred when a police team in a jeep arrived at Depha area of Pilkhuwa to investigate into a complaint.

When the vehicle reached the house of a dreaded criminal, Sarvar Singh, who lives in the area, he and a few of his accomplices, opened fire at the police.

“Assuming that the police encircled their hideout, they fired around 25 rounds at the officials. At this time, a 10-year-old boy, who was playing nearby, was shot,” senior superintendent of police (SSP) Raghubir Lal said.

The victim was later identified as Aman Kumar.

According to senior police officers, the team could not fire back because of the sudden attack. "Only our constable was armed. There was no firing reported from our side," Lal added.

The criminals, before fleeing the spot, also fired at local resident's house assuming he was a police informer and had called the police.

Sub-inspectors Sanjeev Vishnoi and Kamal Kumar who were also injured were taken to Yashoda hospital. Another resident Babu (60), who suffered injuries, was taken to a nearby hospital.
