Nearly 100 houses belonging to Dalits were set on fire, allegedly by an upper caste mob, following a clash, reports Himansu S Sahoo.
Nearly 100 houses belonging to Dalits were set on fire, allegedly by an upper caste mob, following a clash in Alasua village near here on Wednesday night. The Dalits also lost livestock and harvested paddy. Some 15 persons were injured.
Bhubaneswar SP Amitabh Thakur said some Dalit youth were holding a video show on the road in the village when two upper caste youth from neighbouring Daruthenga village came by. They opposed the obstruction to traffic and allegedly assaulted some of the Dalits. A scuffle ensued and the two upper caste youth rushed back to their village. Even as the police reached the spot on hearing about the clash, a 400-strong mob from Daruthenga descended on Alasua. They clashed with the villagers of Alasua and set houses on fire. The police team could do little to stop them.
