Eleven people were injured on Wednesday when police resorted to lathicharge to disperse demonstrators protesting detention of about 30 persons for suspected links with Maoists at Daringbadi in Orissa's Kandhamal district.
The incident took place when a large number of people, including women, demonstrated near Daringbadi block office against the detention made after Maoists ambushed a team of securitymen on Tuesday, killing one of them, the police said.
The slogan shouting protesters gheraoed demanding immediate release of around 30 detenues saying none of them had any links with the rebels, they said.
As the gherao continued for a long time and some of the demonstrators allegedly tried to enter the Block office, police first used mild force and then resorted to batons to disperse the protesters, additional superintendent of police CR Das said.
While the protesters claimed that at least 11 people were injured in police action, the ASP said some of the demonstrators sustained minor injuries and given proper medical treatment.
Shops and business establishments in the town were closed after the incident and police personnel in strength deployed to prevent any major flare up, police said.
About 30 people have been detained by the police since yesterday on suspicion of having links with Maoists after the ultras ambushed the security personnel in Kalingbadi forest under Daringbadi police station area on Tuesday night.
Those detained were being interrogated by the police, sources said.
