A Mumbai policeman who was sacked on charges of raping a teenager a year ago was on Monday sentenced to 12 years rigorous imprisonment by a sessions court.

Judge KV Chandiwal also fined Sunil More Rs 25,000 after finding him guilty of raping the 17-year-old girl in the Marine Drive police post on April 21, 2005.

The verdict came six months after the fast trial began. More was held guilty on three counts - rape by a person on government duty, wrongful confinement and posing a threat to life. At least 27 witnesses testified in the court.

The victim, a Class 11 student, broke down in court while recalling her ordeal.

More had caught the girl with her boyfriend for alleged indecent exposure and demanded Rs 5,000 in bribe for their release.

When her boyfriend left the police post to fetch the money, More allegedly raped her. He was dismissed from service three days later.
